Phase Two of Potter’s Cay Redevelopment to Begin

Commenced under the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) administration, the $3-million-dollar Potter’s Cay Redevelopment project is moving into the second phase.

Speaking with the Bahama Journal yesterday to give an update on the project was Assistant Port Controller Craig Curtis who said phase two is in a waiting stage

“The monies for the completion of phase two has been made available. However the request for additional funding arrived out of the need for the construction of the transformer house and the purchase of the generator. These two items were not included in the original contractor’s estimates,” he said.

“The purpose of the transformer is to provide the needed power supply for the dock in its entirety. Most of the stalls operate on generators and the emission and the noise is a challenge. With BEC having given the nod for the installation of the transformer, it would take care of the cause way.”

Phase one included removing and relocating trees on the southern foreshore to make room for parking area, which is being extended to William Street.

Phase three, Mr. Curtis said will include the extension of the fish farm store among other changes.

“It would be extended to 150 feet to the east, which would house of some 15 stakeholders on the eastern end where they would be able to now do business now at the freight depot,” he said.

“Also phase three comprises the construction of a passenger waiting and bathroom facilities on the eastern section of the dock.”

Back in March of 2015 then Transport and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin sanctioned the three-phased development plan, stating that she believed it will bring order to “organized chaos” that has been occurring at the dock for a number of years.

At that time, she also said the project would take some 16 months. However Mr. Curtis could not give an updated projected date of completion because of the current delay.
